“In this evergreen life,”
said the gray-haired Gardener,
“you can learn nothing except for how to learn.
You can learn just the process of learning
without expectation of the harvest.
You will take only what you take
and you will leave all that you leave.
Your life is such as you live it.
And you can’t fool yourself.”
“And in this evergreen death,”
said the Gardener,
“one finds no meaning
except for the search for meaning.
The meaning itself can’t be found.
It is not the wallet with money.
Money can be spent.
Nor the glasses.
Glasses can’t fix the eyesight of the blind.
Not a book with pages ripped out.
You can’t find the meaning while looking for it.
The meaning can be born and it can blossom.
The meaning leaves when you leave.
You will take only what you learn.
You will learn that which you amend
and you will leave all that you took
and you’ll take all that you left…"
